Custom sugar skulls for a cantina in Sullivan’s Island, SC. Photos by Landon Neil Phillips.
Problem: The client wanted art for their new location that spoke to the fun, laid-back energy of Mex 1 but felt a bit more complex and polished than a mural.
How we solved it: Sugar skulls play a big part in Mex 1’s branding, so we decided to take them a step further by designing three custom skulls. Each wooden skull keeps to a specific theme and color scheme, which are carried out using colorful, translucent acrylic shaped in a paper-filigree technique. The resulting sugar skulls are playful translations of a very traditional concept. They pick up and diffuse light in different ways throughout the day, and even seem to glow at night.
